The Rupununi Savannah: Getting There

Georgetown to Lethem and the Rupununi lodges: by small aircraft, by the long road through the forest, and across from Brazil.

Lethem is about 550 km from Georgetown by road. A flight takes an hour and a half; the overland journey takes a night and often most of the next day.

By air

Two or three small airlines fly between Ogle and Lethem, usually daily. Aircraft carry around a dozen passengers, the baggage allowance is small, and flights can call at Annai or Karanambu when booked. Seats go quickly around Easter, Christmas and school holidays. In Lethem the airstrip is in the middle of town.

By road from Georgetown

Minibuses and a few larger buses leave Georgetown in the evening, drive the paved highway to Linden and then the unpaved trail through Mabura Hill and Iwokrama, cross the Essequibo at Kurupukari and emerge on to the savannah near Annai the next morning, reaching Lethem around midday if all goes well. Police checkpoints record passports. The ride is hard and dusty or muddy by season; sections are being paved in stages.

From Brazil

Buses and shared taxis link Boa Vista with Bonfim. Get stamped out at the Brazilian federal police post, cross the bridge by taxi, and enter Guyana at the Lethem immigration office. Have your yellow fever certificate with you, and check opening hours — the posts close at night.

Getting around the Rupununi

Between lodges you travel by 4x4, boat or light aircraft, organised by the lodges. Savannah tracks are fast when dry and impassable in places when flooded, when boats take over. In Lethem there are taxis and motorbike hire; pickups and minibuses serve the larger villages irregularly. Distances are long and fuel is costly, so transfers are a significant part of any budget.

The Rupununi Savannah: getting there FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Should I fly or take the bus to Lethem?

Fly if you can afford it — it saves two days over a return trip. The bus is a worthwhile adventure once, in the dry season, if you have time and a strong back.

Can I cross into Brazil for the day?

Many nationalities can visit Bonfim and Boa Vista without a visa, but you must still complete exit and entry formalities. Check the rules for your passport.

Is the road to Lethem open in the rainy season?

Usually, but it deteriorates badly from about June to August and journeys can take more than a day. Flooding can also cut tracks to the lodges, which then switch to boats.
