The Rupununi Savannah Tours & Tickets

The Rupununi is booked lodge by lodge or as a package from Georgetown. Only one overland package touching the region is sold online.

As at Iwokrama, you buy a stay with activities. Each lodge includes meals and two or three guided outings a day: boat trips, savannah drives, forest walks, fishing, village visits. Because lodges are far apart and reached by different combinations of plane, 4x4 and boat, the skill lies in linking them — which is why most visitors hand the logistics to an operator or let the lodges coordinate among themselves.

The wildlife activities are led by people who live here. At Yupukari you can join the village’s long-running black caiman study on the river at night, helping to weigh and measure animals before release. At Rewa, community guides manage catch-and-release arapaima fishing. At Karanambu, trackers ride ahead at dawn to find anteaters.

Bookable online from Georgetown

GetYourGuide lists only a handful of Guyana products, nearly all starting in Georgetown. These are the real ones.

A note on what you can book online

GetYourGuide lists nothing for the Rupununi lodges. The only related product is a ten-day overland package from Georgetown to Brazil, shown below; read its programme closely to see which places it actually visits. The other cards are the Georgetown products you may want before or after.

The Rupununi Savannah: how to book locally

Contact the lodges directly by email — Karanambu, Caiman House, Rewa Eco-Lodge, Dadanawa and Waikin each handle their own reservations — or ask a Georgetown operator for a complete itinerary. Visit Rupununi, the regional tourism association based in Lethem, represents community lodges and local guides and is a good first contact for the less-known villages.

Fix the flights first: the Ogle–Lethem service has limited seats and will land at Karanambu or Annai when there are enough passengers. Then let the lodges arrange boats and vehicles between them. For the rodeo, reserve flights and a room in Lethem several months ahead.

The Rupununi Savannah tours: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the Rupununi on a budget?

More cheaply than the brochure prices suggest, if you take the minibus to Lethem, stay in town and arrange day trips and community guesthouses locally through Visit Rupununi. It takes time and flexibility.

Do I need a guide?

Yes. There are no marked trails or public boats; all outings are with lodge or village guides, and villages expect visitors to be accompanied.

Is the caiman research suitable for everyone?

You watch from a second boat and can help with measuring on the sandbank if you wish. It runs late into the night and depends on river levels.
