Every visit involves a village guide, both because the trails are unmarked and because the land belongs to the communities. Outings range from an afternoon at a waterfall to multi-day hikes with hammocks and a cook.
The wildlife draw is the harpy eagle, the most powerful eagle of the Americas. Villagers monitor nests in the foothills, and when one is occupied — a pair raises a single chick over many months — guides can lead visitors to a viewpoint. It usually means a hot walk of several hours and offers no certainty, but this is among the better places anywhere to try.
