Kanuku Mountains: When to Go

When to visit the Kanuku Mountains: dry-season trekking and rainy-season waterfalls.

The Kanukus share the Rupununi’s single wet season, about May to August, though the mountains attract cloud and showers at any time. Forest trails are noticeably cooler than the savannah.

Season by season

September to November: early dry season

Streams still run well, the forest is green and tracks are drying. A good time for both falls and hikes.

December to April: dry season

The easiest months for trekking, camping and river trips; waterfalls shrink as the season goes on. Very hot on the approach across the savannah.

May to August: the rains

Falls are in full flow, but trails are muddy, streams hard to cross and tracks to the villages can flood. Long hikes are generally not offered.
