Georgetown: Getting There

How to reach Georgetown from its two airports, from Suriname and from the interior, and how to get around the city.

Nearly everyone arrives by air at Cheddi Jagan International, an hour south of the city. Overland arrivals come along the coast road from Suriname or, after a very long ride, up the trail from Lethem and Brazil.

From Cheddi Jagan International Airport

The airport is at Timehri, about 40 km up the East Bank of the Demerara. Official taxis wait outside arrivals with posted fares, and many hotels send a car on request. The road is busy and partly unlit; the drive takes about an hour, longer at rush hour. If you land at night, a taxi or a pre-booked transfer is the sensible choice. Minibuses are very cheap but are not practical with luggage or after dark.

From Ogle airport

Eugene F. Correia International, at Ogle, is on the East Coast road about 10 km from the centre. Taxis wait at the terminal. For early domestic departures, book a taxi the evening before; check-in for interior flights typically closes an hour before take-off.

Overland from Suriname

From Paramaribo, shared minibuses run to the ferry at South Drain, the Canawaima ferry crosses the Corentyne to Moleson Creek, and minibuses continue through Berbice to Georgetown. Most travellers buy a through ticket from one of the transport services, which collect from hotels in the small hours to make the morning ferry.

From Lethem and Brazil

Flights from Lethem land at Ogle. Minibuses and buses take the long unpaved trail through Iwokrama and Linden, usually overnight. See getting to the Rupununi.

Getting around the city

The centre is compact and flat, and walking between the main sights is easy by day. Taxis are cheap and plentiful: use a company recommended by your hotel, recognisable by the code on its number plate beginning with H, and agree the fare first, as there are no meters. Ride-hailing apps have begun to operate. Minibuses cover every route for a small fixed fare and are an experience in themselves — loud, crowded and quick. After dark, take a taxi door to door.
