Georgetown Tours & Tickets

City and food tours, a Kaieteur Falls flight, an Essequibo River day trip and airport transfers — Georgetown is where nearly every online-bookable Guyana tour begins.

Georgetown is the one place in Guyana where GetYourGuide has a real, if small, selection. There are three guided city tours — two built around food, one by private car around the colonial architecture — and they are worth considering even if you usually explore alone: a local guide knows which streets are pleasant to walk, where to eat, and how to get into buildings that look closed.

The same listings include the two classic day trips, the flight to Kaieteur Falls and the speedboat day on the Essequibo, together with airport transfers and transport towards Suriname. If you book only one thing before you arrive, make it Kaieteur, followed by the transfer from the international airport.

A note on what you can book online

GetYourGuide lists ten products for Guyana and all of them start in Georgetown; they are all shown here. Several are new and have no reviews yet. The El Dorado distillery tour, museum visits and birding in the Botanical Gardens are not sold on GetYourGuide and are arranged locally.

Georgetown: how to book locally

For anything not listed online, ask your hotel or a Georgetown tour operator — most have a desk or will answer on WhatsApp within a day. Typical local offerings are half-day city tours, early-morning birding in the Botanical Gardens with a specialist guide, the Demerara Distillers (El Dorado) heritage tour at Diamond, which runs on set days and must be reserved, boat trips to see hoatzins on the Mahaica River, and day trips to Santa Mission or the creek resorts along the Linden highway.

Georgetown is also where interior trips are put together. If you have arrived without a plan, operators can sometimes add you to an existing departure for Kaieteur, Iwokrama or the Rupununi at a few days’ notice, but do not count on it in the main dry-season months.

Georgetown tours: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is a guided tour of Georgetown worth it?

For a first day, yes. The sights are spread over a couple of kilometres, some streets are better avoided, and a guide adds the history that the buildings themselves do not explain.

Can I visit the El Dorado rum distillery?

Tours of the heritage centre at the Diamond distillery have been offered on weekdays by reservation. Arrange it through your hotel or an operator and confirm the current days and price.

Do tours include hotel pickup?

Many do, within central Georgetown. Check the “includes” and meeting-point details on each listing.

Which day should I book Kaieteur for?

The earliest full day of your stay. If the flight is postponed for weather or numbers, you still have later days to fall back on.
