Georgetown: When to Go

When to visit Georgetown: the two rainy seasons, the driest months, and the festivals that fill the streets.

Georgetown is hot and humid all year, with afternoon highs around 30 °C and a steady sea breeze. Rain, not temperature, makes the difference, and heavy downpours can flood low streets for a few hours.

Season by season

February to April: dry season

The most comfortable time for walking the city, with Mashramani in February, Phagwah in March and kites over the seawall at Easter.

May to mid-August: long rains

Frequent heavy showers, usually with dry spells between. Sightseeing is still possible; carry an umbrella and expect some street flooding.

Mid-August to November: second dry season

Hot, sunny and generally reliable. September is Amerindian Heritage Month, with events at the Umana Yana and in the National Park.

December and January: short rains

Showers return, but December is festive: Christmas lights, pepperpot and masquerade bands, and many Guyanese home from abroad.

Visitor numbers & booking ahead

Georgetown never feels crowded with tourists. What matters is hotel availability: rooms are tightest from Monday to Thursday all year, because of business travel, and around Mashramani, Easter, August and Christmas, when the diaspora returns. Book those dates well ahead. International flights are also fullest and most expensive in July, August and December.
