Surama & Annai: When to Go

When to visit Surama and Annai: dry months for mountains and trails, the rains for a green, flooded landscape.

This is the transition zone between forest and savannah, with one main rainy season from about May to August. Days are hot; nights and dawns can be fresh.

Season by season

September to November: early dry season

The land is still green, rivers are dropping and trails are firm. A very good time for the Burro-Burro and for onward boat travel.

December to April: dry season

Reliable weather for the mountain and the Wowetta trail, with the cock-of-the-rock lek at its liveliest early in the year. The grass turns gold and the afternoons are very hot by March.

May to August: the rains

Heavy storms, high rivers and muddy trails; the savannah south of Annai floods. Fewer visitors and dramatic skies, but some outings are cancelled and the road is slow.

Visitor numbers & booking ahead

Neither lodge is ever crowded, but both are small and sit on every tour operator’s route, so the dry-season months are often fully booked by groups. Reserve two to three months ahead for February–April and September–November, and longer for Easter.
