Linden & the Highway Tours & Tickets

There are no Linden tours online. The one multi-day overland package that passes this way, and how to arrange a local visit, are explained here.

Linden is not on the standard tourist circuit, and visits are informal: a hired car and driver from Georgetown, or a minibus and local taxis. A driver who knows the town can show you the mine viewpoints, the blue lakes and the waterwheel in a couple of hours, which would be awkward to find alone.

The more organised trips in this area go to Rockstone, a small community on the Essequibo west of Linden, for boat trips to Gluck Island — known for Victoria amazonica lilies and birds — and for sport fishing.

Our picks: Linden & the Highway

Bookable online from Georgetown

GetYourGuide lists only a handful of Guyana products, nearly all starting in Georgetown. These are the real ones.

A note on what you can book online

GetYourGuide lists no tour of Linden or the highway. The Georgetown products below are the only ones bookable online for this part of the country.

Linden & the Highway: how to book locally

Ask a Georgetown taxi company or tour operator for a day’s hire with a driver; agree the stops and the price in advance. For Rockstone, operators and the community’s own tourism group arrange transport from Linden, boats and meals — give a few days’ notice.

If you are travelling south by minibus to Lethem, you can board in Linden rather than Georgetown, but reserve the seat beforehand through the bus company’s Georgetown office.

Linden & the Highway tours: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Linden worth visiting?

For most short trips, no — time is better spent at Kaieteur or on the Essequibo. It is worthwhile if you are interested in industrial history, want a local day out, or are passing through anyway.

Can I visit a working bauxite mine?

Not casually. Active sites are industrial areas; visits need permission from the operating company. Old pits and the blue lakes can be viewed from outside with a local guide.

Can I swim in the blue lakes?

They are flooded mine pits with steep sides and no supervision. Local people do swim in some, but there have been accidents; admire them from the shore.
