By road from Georgetown
Follow the East Bank road past the airport turn-off to Soesdyke, then the Soesdyke–Linden Highway, opened in the late 1960s, for about 70 km through rolling white-sand country. The highway is fast and has had serious accidents, especially at night and on holiday weekends; travel by day. Minibuses on route 43 leave Georgetown when full throughout the day and arrive at the Mackenzie or Wismar parks.
Onward to the interior
Linden is where the Georgetown–Lethem trail begins. Lethem-bound minibuses pass through in the late evening; the road continues through Mabura Hill to Iwokrama and the Rupununi. A separate road branches off towards Mahdia, the starting point for the overland trek to Kaieteur. Carry your passport: there are police checkpoints.
Getting around
Taxis are cheap and are the practical way to link Mackenzie, Wismar and the sights. Small boats ferry people across the Demerara for a few cents. For the blue lakes and Rockstone you need a driver who knows the sandy tracks.
