Georgetown to New Amsterdam

Minibuses leave from the parks near Stabroek Market and run along the East Coast and West Berbice to the Berbice River. Since 2008 a floating toll bridge has carried traffic across a little upstream of the old ferry stelling at Rosignol; some minibuses terminate at Rosignol, others continue into New Amsterdam. The road is fast and overtaking is aggressive — choose a seat away from the front if you are nervous.

Along the Corentyne

From New Amsterdam the road crosses the Canje bridge and runs for about 80 km to Corriverton. Minibuses and shared “hire cars” pass constantly and can be flagged anywhere.

Crossing to Suriname

The official crossing is the vehicle ferry from Moleson Creek to South Drain, which has normally sailed once or twice a day; check-in closes well before departure, and schedules change, so confirm locally. Complete Guyanese immigration at the terminal. On the Suriname side, minibuses and taxis run to Nieuw Nickerie and on to Paramaribo in about four hours. Suriname has required an entry fee or e-visa arranged online beforehand for many nationalities, and may ask for a yellow fever certificate. Small boats also cross the river informally from Corriverton: this “backtrack” route is not a legal entry point for tourists and should be avoided.

Getting around

New Amsterdam is small enough to walk. Elsewhere use minibuses, hire cars or taxis; for hoatzin trips and upriver journeys you need a boat arranged in advance.
