Iwokrama Forest & the Canopy Walkway Tours & Tickets

Iwokrama is booked through its lodges and local operators, not online. Here is what a stay includes and how to arrange it.

A visit to Iwokrama is sold as a lodge stay with activities rather than as separate tours. The nightly rate normally covers your room, all meals and a programme of guided outings chosen with you on arrival: forest walks, boat trips, the walkway at different times of day, night drives and spotlighting.

Guides are the heart of it. Most are Makushi men and women from the neighbouring villages, trained through the Iwokrama ranger programme, and their ability to find and name wildlife by sound alone is remarkable. Serious birders should request a specialist bird guide when booking.

Bookable online from Georgetown

GetYourGuide lists only a handful of Guyana products, nearly all starting in Georgetown. These are the real ones.

A note on what you can book online

GetYourGuide has no product for Iwokrama or the canopy walkway. The Georgetown products below are the only ones bookable online; we show them so you can arrange the days before and after your forest stay.

Iwokrama Forest & the Canopy Walkway: how to book locally

Book Iwokrama River Lodge through the Iwokrama International Centre’s tourism office in Georgetown, and Atta Rainforest Lodge through the company that operates it; both answer by email. Alternatively, any Georgetown tour operator will package the two lodges with transport and onward stays. Day visitors to the canopy walkway are accepted by arrangement and pay an entrance fee.

Ask what is included — the reserve charges a forest user fee on top of accommodation, and transfers are quoted separately. Arrange transport at the same time: lodges coordinate 4x4 transfers with each other and with flights into Annai or the nearby strips, and can reserve a seat for you on the Georgetown–Lethem minibus if you are travelling cheaply.

Iwokrama Forest & the Canopy Walkway tours: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Iwokrama independently?

You can arrive on the public minibus and stay at the River Lodge, which is beside the road at Kurupukari, but book ahead: the lodge needs to plan meals and guides. Atta is off the main road and requires a transfer.

Is the canopy walkway scary?

It sways a little and is high, but it is solidly built with mesh sides and steel platforms. Anyone comfortable on a suspension footbridge will be fine.

How likely is a jaguar?

Nobody can promise one. Guides suggest that guests who spend several dawns and dusks on the road have a fair chance in the dry season. Many do not see one.
