Essequibo River & Bartica Tours & Tickets

A long day trip on the Essequibo from Georgetown is bookable online; resort stays and private boats are arranged locally.

The Essequibo day tour is a set piece. You are collected in Georgetown early, driven across the Demerara and along the West Coast to Parika, and put aboard a covered speedboat. Stops usually include Fort Island for the Dutch fort and museum, Bartica for a walk, a river resort or island for lunch, and a waterfall for a swim, returning to the city in the evening.

It is a long day — around twelve hours — with a lot of time on the water, and the boats bounce when the wind is against the tide. In return you see a great deal of river for a modest outlay by Guyanese standards.

Bookable online from Georgetown

GetYourGuide lists only a handful of Guyana products, nearly all starting in Georgetown. These are the real ones.

A note on what you can book online

GetYourGuide lists one Essequibo product: a five-stop island and town day tour with lunch, shown first below. River resorts, private boat hire, fishing and overnight packages are not on GetYourGuide.

Essequibo River & Bartica: how to book locally

The river resorts sell their own day passes and overnight packages including boat transfers from Parika or flights to Baganara’s airstrip; contact them directly or through a Georgetown operator. Baganara is also offered as a lunch stop on some Kaieteur combination flights.

Independent travellers can simply take a minibus to Parika and a public speedboat to Bartica, then hire a boat and boatman at the Bartica stelling for a few hours to visit Marshall Falls, Kyk-Over-Al and the nearby islands. Agree the route, the waiting time and the price before leaving, and insist on life jackets.

Essequibo River & Bartica tours: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is the Essequibo day trip worth it?

Yes, if you will not otherwise travel on Guyana’s rivers. If you are going on to the Rupununi lodges, you may prefer to spend the day in Georgetown instead.

Are the speedboats safe?

They are the everyday public transport of the river and carry life jackets, which you should wear. Travel in daylight, and expect spray and some bumps.

Can I swim in the Essequibo?

People swim at the resorts, the river beaches near Bartica and the waterfalls, where the water is dark but clean. Ask locally about currents, and do not swim near the muddy river mouth.
