Everything on the lower Essequibo starts at Parika, a market town and stelling on the east bank, reached from Georgetown across the Demerara River bridge.

Georgetown to Parika

The road crosses the Demerara by the harbour bridge — a new high-level bridge has been built alongside the old floating one — and follows the West Coast through villages and rice fields. Minibuses leave from Stabroek Market throughout the day. Leave early: morning traffic at the bridge is heavy, and boats to Bartica are most frequent before midday.

Speedboats and ferries

At Parika stelling, speedboats for Bartica fill and go — usually every half hour or so in daylight — carrying around 20 passengers under a canopy. Bags go in the bow; keep valuables with you and put on the life jacket. The last boats leave mid to late afternoon. The slow vehicle ferry takes far longer and runs only on some days, but is a pleasant way to see the islands if your timing fits.

By air

Bartica has an airstrip served by small aircraft from Ogle, and Baganara Island has its own. Flights are short and scenic and are mostly used by resort guests and on Kaieteur combinations.

Getting around

Bartica is walkable, with taxis for the outskirts. For forts, falls and islands you hire a boat at the stelling or use the resort’s. Day tours include all boat travel. Roads lead inland from Bartica to the mining districts but are of little use to visitors.
