Orinduik Falls spilling over wide steps of dark rock

Kaieteur Falls & Orinduik: Practical Travel Guide

Planning a Kaieteur visit: where to sleep, what to bring, how to keep costs down and how to stay safe at an unfenced 226-metre drop.

Where to base yourself

Georgetown

The practical base. Stay anywhere central, or near Ogle on the East Coast if you prefer a short drive to the airport on the morning of the flight.

Kaieteur guesthouse

A simple wooden guesthouse near the airstrip, run for the national park, with basic rooms or hammock space and no restaurant — food is brought in. It must be arranged in advance through an operator or the park authority, along with flights on different days.

Tukeit and the Potaro camps

Hammock camps used by overland groups at the foot of the escarpment and beside the lower falls.

Food & drink

There is nowhere to buy food or drink at the falls. Day tours usually include a light snack or packed lunch, eaten at the visitor building; bring your own water and something extra if you have an early start. Overnight and trekking parties carry all supplies with them.

Tips: saving money and staying safe

  • The simplest way to pay less per person is to join a shared weekend flight rather than chartering.
  • Compare what is included: park fee, snack and hotel transfers are sometimes extra.
  • Wear closed shoes with good grip; the sandstone is slick when wet.
  • There are no fences. Do not approach the edge for a photograph, and never step on to wet rock near the lip.
  • Bring a rain jacket, hat, sunscreen and repellent in a small daypack — larger bags stay behind.
  • A wide-angle lens or a phone captures the falls best; keep electronics in a waterproof bag.
  • Drones generally need permission in the national park — ask before you fly one.

Kaieteur Falls & Orinduik: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Kaieteur Falls worth the money?

Almost everyone who goes says yes. It is the highlight of most Guyana trips, and the emptiness of the place is something few famous waterfalls can still offer.

Kaieteur or Orinduik?

Kaieteur, without question, if you can do only one. Orinduik is a pleasant addition for the swim and the savannah scenery.

Can I stay overnight at the falls?

Yes, in the park guesthouse, by prior arrangement. It is basic, and you depend on tour flights on two different days.

Do I need malaria tablets for a day trip?

The falls are in the interior, where malaria occurs. Take your travel clinic’s advice; at the least, use repellent.
